FAQs

  1. If my child takes CTAE courses, can he/she still go to college?  CTAE courses prepare students academically and technically for post-secondary educational opportunities and for work opportunities directly after high school.

  2. Will all students need to complete a college degree to be employable?  Workers in occupations requiring a bachelor’s or higher degree will hold 20% of all jobs by 2012.

  3. What are the fastest growing occupations?  8 out of 20 are in healthcare; 5 are computer-related

  4. What is articulation?  Students can earn technical college credit for high school courses successfully passed.

  5. How does articulation with a post-secondary institution help my student?  Preparation courses before articulation at the technical college increases academic and technical skills through a program of study without duplicating course work at the post-secondary institution. 

  6. What is Youth Apprenticeship?  A highly structured work-based learning program for students who are age 16 or older and in the 11th or 12th grade. This work experience is directly related to a student’s career interest/pathway and allows them to perform duties related to his/her occupational area. Students receive one unit of credit for each course taken.

  7. What is an internship?  Internships provide a student with the opportunity to study an occupational program directly related to his/her career interest and to participate in a workplace setting by performing duties related to the occupational studies.

  8. Are job shadowing experiences important for my student?  Job shadowing introduces a student to a particular job or career by pairing the student with an employee of a business.

  9. What are the benefits of students participating in Career and Technical Student Organizations?  CTSOs develop leadership skills and workplace competencies.  Competition exists at the local, regional, state, and national levels. CTSOs promote civic and personal responsibility.

  10. Why should students take marketing courses?  There are more than 1.2 million jobs in marketing and communications. These jobs are expected to grow faster than the average, especially for public relations and management services.

  11. Where can I find information on health careers in Georgia?  www.gahealthcareers.org

  12. What is dual enrollment and why is it important?  Dual enrollment allows high school students to take a technical college course and get high school and technical college credit. These courses are not offered at the high school.

  13. How are dual enrollment courses paid for?  The HOPE Grant will cover tuition and fees. These credit hours will be included in the maximum number of credit hours they can receive from the HOPE Grant Program upon high school graduation.

  14. Why should a student take technical courses?  Current research indicates that in the 21st Century the largest number of jobs will be available for persons trained in specific career and technical areas.

  15. What is the number one reason that a student drops out of college?  Lack of a Career Focus!

  16. What skill do most employers say is the most important for all employees?  Communication skills

  17. Top reasons why students as employees get fired?  Inability to get along, absenteeism, lack of interest and unwillingness to learn, continually making costly mistakes, does not follow directions

How are today’s CTAE courses different from the old vocational courses?  Today's career and technical education program increasingly incorporates rigorous and challenging academic content standards and provides a non-duplicative sequence of courses leading to an industry-recognized credential or certificate, or an associate or baccalaureate degree.

  20. Who really benefits from Career & Technical Education programs?   ALL STUDENTS interested in:  Learning academic content through practical applications, Life skills that apply to all careers, Workplace readiness skills, Focused high school studies that lead to a career, Courses and programs that use industry-standard technology, and Great jobs with good pay and employee satisfaction.
