EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Each of the 9 Army Junior ROTC programs within the MCSD Directorate has at a minimum Male and/or Female Drill Team, Color Guard, Leaders Challenge Team and an Air Rifle Team.  A cadet has the opportunity to participate in one or a combination of these major competitive activities.  The MCSD Director of Army Instruction (DAI) is responsible for the Area 5 Drill District consisting of 14 JROTC programs.  Teams participate in 4 local Area 5 events, an Area 5 Drill Meet Championship at Hardaway HS and the top 3 from the Area will advance to the Georgia JROTC State Drill Meet at Fort Gordon, Georgia in the spring.

The Drill Teams and Color Guards not only participate in competitive events, but also routinely support an array of community activities by performing at parades, football games, special events and middle school orientations.
As members of the teams, Cadets who participate in competitive events must meet the State Quality Basic Education (QBE) standards.  The JROTC program takes academics very serious and vigorously enforces the standards.

DRILL TEAMS

Each JROTC unit will organize and maintain at least one drill team.  Depending on the size of the JROTC program, there may be more than one drill team.  Teams are composed of all males, all females or mixed gender group.  Drill Teams develop personalized and unique drill sequences.  There are 18 types of drill routines that a unit may prepare a team for local and state competitions.

COLOR GUARDS

Each JROTC unit has organized at least one Color Guard Team.  Once again, depending upon the size of the unit, there may be as many as three color guard teams within a JROTC program.  A Color Guard Team is comprised of four (4) male or female cadets who will be assigned to the positions of National Flag Bearer, Georgia State Flag or school flag, and two (2) guards.  These teams also compete at the local and state drill meet events.

AIR RIFLE TEAMS

Each JROTC unit has formed and trained a competitive Air Rifle Team to compete in a GHSA Area consisting of 15 schools.  This is a varsity High School competitive marksmanship sport governed by the Georgia High School Association.  US Army certified and qualified Air Rifle Team coaches conduct the activity and must comply with Civilian Marksmanship Program and GHSA directives and guidelines designed for all marksmanship programs.  A student does not have to be a US Army JROTC cadet to participate in the activity.  Units participate in 8 Area matches and the top 4 advance to the GHSA State Air Rifle Championship in March of every year.

LEADERS CHALLENGE

During the month of April each school year, MCSD JROTC conducts an event called Leaders Challenge.  Event is conducted at Stewart-Watson field on the Fort Benning installation.  Purpose is challenge JROTC cadets, both mentally and physically, in the development of individual, team and leadership skills.  The competition tests our cadets in hands-on activities such as mountaineering (basic knots and a one rope bridge), Physical fitness with the US Army PT test, obstacle course, a team run under timed conditions and an academic evaluation.  The day-long event will conclude with awards to the best male and female teams for each event and a Leaders Challenge Cup for the top teams.

JROTC CADET LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE (JCLC)

JCLC is a week long cadet leadership training exercise conducted at the conclusion of the school year (late May or early June).  The mission is to provide Army JROTC cadets from Muscogee County School District and surrounding community JROTC units an environment conducive to the leadership techniques and good citizenship in a military environment. Annually, 200 to 225 cadets participate. The four to five day camp is conducted on Fort Benning.  JCLC training activities include the 34 foot Airborne Tower, Eagle Rappelling Tower, Malvesti (Ranger) Obstacle Course and Self-Defense class and water survival activities (drown proofing).  Cadets are billeted either at Columbus State University campus housing or at Sand Hill in the OUST or Infantry Training barracks facilities.  JCLC is physically intense and mentally challenging event, yet fantastic and FUN activity for our LET 2,  3 and 4 cadets.

ANNUAL JROTC BALL

The Annual JROTC Ball is conducted in late January or early February each year on a Saturday evening at the Ballroom in the Columbus Trade and Convention Center.  Approximately 1350 cadets and invited guests attend from MCSD, Chattahoochee County, Central of Talbot ton, Russell County, Central of Phenix City NJROTC, Randolph-Clay and the Smith Station Marine JROTC.  Music is provided by a local DJ.  Refreshments are provided by the Trade Center.  Cadets are dressed in the Class A uniform and guests are escorted in formal evening wear.  Queens are crowned from each school at the start of the ceremonial evening.  An exciting and fun event for all cadets.
